WESTMOUNT PSYCHOLOGIST: STRESS

WESTMOUNT PSYCHOLOGIST: STRESS

Stress is an important part of life. Many situations are perceived as stressful. The goal is not to eliminate stress, rather your perception of it and how you mange your stress. Ask yourself these questions:
  • How do you manage and cope with stress?
  • Do you feel overwhelmed and feel like you cannot handle it anymore?
  • Do you tend to eating as a means to cope and does it work?
  • Or maybe you stop eating because you lose your appetite?
  • Do you try to give yourself a break by drinking alcohol? Does it make the problems disappear?
  • Do you feel more irritable, short tempered, and aggressive (verbally or physically)?
  • Or you rather sleep off your stress and just want to be in bed?
  • Do you stop your healthy routine such as exercise, good eating habit, and relaxation and just focus on the problem on hand?
Coping with stress by eating, drinking alcohol, or distracting yourself may help for a brief moment but in general they are maladaptive behaviors that usually in long term magnify and worsen the problem and can cause depression, anxiety, and marital issues.  You don't need to run away from life and numb your feelings in order to get by. You can learn how to manage your life so you can mange your stress better. Contact one of our Montreal psychologists at Clinique Dr. Bita for more information on stress management.
